My other project

Well, I guess I ought to share this here, I finally launched that thing I mentioned last year.

http://doomedlegionsecret.wordpress.com

It was SUPPOSED to have a proper comic-format website, but that has been put on hold. While WordPress is nice, it isn’t really set up to make viewing comics easy and simple.

I worry that if I make that site too public and searchable that it will fall flat because it isn’t quite to easy to see, and the flow is lost. I don’t know, but, they’re up, take a look if you’re curious. Oh, and I should mention, these are characters…while based in truth, they are not accurate representations of anyone. If they resemble you, or someone you know, don’t worry, this is fictionalized. ; )

Comiiiics

I like comics. They make me happy, I love the feel of something hand drawn and a little weathered, something planned out with clever writing and a cute punchline.

I decided to copy a comic from a wonderful artist and writer Karl Kerschel. I really love the underlying message in a lot of his humor, also the mixture of silliness and beautiful realistic art. Mine isn’t quite as realistic, but I think I was working smaller to start with.

This is a present, and an experiment in media, I took a sheet of cold press watercolor paper and dyed it in tea, once it dried I inked over it, and I think this is a rather nice, aged-looking piece of art.

What do you think?

Pencils, projects, blogs, wait, that wasn’t another ‘p’

My alliteration has failed me. What would you call a blog with the letter P? Ponderings in Pixels?

Ohh..I may use that.

Anyway, I received these today from my gramma:

and I hadn’t used them before, but they seemed familiar, so I did a quick search.

So if you’re curious about the pencils, there’s a little review.

I am usually partial to the mechanical pencil for my drafting and sketching, although sometimes I use a soft, thick woodless pencil…but I’m always open to trying new or different pencils to expand my sketching options. I can’t remember the brand of woodless pencils I use, ugh. I want to say koh-i-noor, but it could just as easily be faber castell.

For the non-arty types, you probably think a pencil is a pencil, why all the fuss?

To an extent, yes, it doesn’t matter too much what your tools are for sketches, but, it can be the difference between riding a unicycle and a bicycle sometimes. You CAN get from place to place on a unicycle, but it requires more focus and skill to get the same result, with a nicer pencil it can be extra smooth and making it easier can enhance your idea process.

Of course, getting back to my surprise present…I don’t know why my gramma sent them, there’s no holiday or birthday I’m aware of, though I’m thoroughly pleased. =)

Clean and Organize

Ohh lookit that pile of stuff.

My newest project sadly is just organizing things. Although I DO have a project in the works that I may finish in-between cleaning and other things like..uh..work! Lots of working and moving heavy crap.

Luckily a lot of this is books, but, there’s also a lot of stuff I have to find accessible places for.

Also, hey, a big stack of my art books! I wonder if any have blank space still…most are full, I know that.

I’m slightly overwhelmed, but hey, it’s a lot more accessible than it used to be.

Any tips on organizing in this space? I’m thinking I’m going to get a small drawer bin for one of the empty nooks I have.

I also have this cool bowl of steel balls…I don’t have a lot of use for it, but I really like it still.

Yet another.. hush hush project

So, the latest project in the works…I can’t show you yet.

I’m collaborating with some friends, and using them as references to start a comic strip. I don’t think it will be daily, as we all are busy 20-somethings and can’t hang out all the time any more. However, we do hang out often and much fun and shenanigans are had.

My gaming group, (The Doomed Legion-website coming soon!) is often attending cons and getting together for various games, and we’re all outspoken, intelligent, and thoroughly silly, which should make excellent comic-fodder. I plan to keep all the characters in the spirit of those they are based on, but, while some things are direct quotes, others will be made up and I’m considering putting something along the lines of ‘any resemblance to real persons living or dead is purely coincidental’

However, that isn’t really true, so, I’m debating a better word-choice, something tongue-in-cheek perhaps.

Anyway, here is your sneak peek, I’m going to change the font later on, but haven’t got it set up yet.

Secret Project

Well…it was supposed to be secret, but I was impatient and wanted to work on it when my friend was here, so, bah.

Anyway, this is a peek of what I’m working on.

It’s going to be a full mask, I got most of the head portion finished the other day, but I haven’t got more pictures for you yet.

Oh, also, you can stick your hand in the nose and make the tentacles move, although you can’t wear it that way.

Is it obvious who it is? Guesses?

I’m thinking about making some kind of mask for halloween…but they take a while, so I want it to be something cool, so if I start it early I’ll still want to use it by October. Also, not TOO complicated so I don’t just get tired and annoyed, hehe

Decisions decisions…

Character doodles

I played some D&D last night and played with my brush pens while others were working on their characters.

I’m a little torn on the colors, I may make the pinks more red.

Also, it looks like shrinking the picture makes the lip/nose shadow appear as a mustache or giant lips…that’s a little disconcerting.
